Childproofing Your Fence: Tips for a Safe and Secure Backyard

As a parent, ensuring your child's safety is a top priority. If you have a fence in your backyard, it's important to make sure it is childproofed to prevent any accidents or injuries. Here are some tips for childproofing your fence to ensure a safe and secure backyard.

A)  Choose the right fence

When choosing a fence for your backyard, consider the safety of your children. Fences with large gaps or wide openings can be a safety hazard, as children can slip through or get their heads stuck.  A solid wood or vinyl fence with small openings is a safer option.  So if you have young children, maybe forego metal fencing for now.

B) Install a self-closing gate

A self-closing gate installation is an important safety feature for any fence. It ensures that the gate is always closed and prevents children from wandering out of the yard. Additionally, make sure the gate latch is out of reach of young children.

C) Add a lock to the gate

A lock on the gate* adds an extra layer of security and ensures that your child cannot open the gate on their own. Choose a lock that is childproof, but also easy for adults to open and close.

D) Check for any gaps or openings

Regularly check your fence for any gaps or openings. Over time, fences including wood fencing can become damaged or weathered, which can create openings that children can slip through.  Cedar fencing is less prone to the elements compared to the pressure-treated type.  Make sure to repair any gaps or openings immediately.

E) Remove any climbable objects

Children are curious and may try to climb over the fence. Remove any objects near the fence that children could use to climb, such as chairs, tables, or planters.

F) Consider adding additional safety measures

If you have a pool in your backyard, you must have pool fencing. Additionally, if your child is particularly active, consider adding padding to the fence posts to prevent any injuries.
